What These Smells May Tell You
Damp and Musty Odour
Every smell may have a meaning behind it. Some of the old clocks create quite a noise when you try to listen to them carefully. Materials such as brass, oil, steel, and wood used inside react with one another when the process is disrupted. If you manage to find out the source behind the smell, then you may be able to know what’s actually happening.
If the smell is similar to that of an old cupboard, it may mean that moisture has crept into the case. On occasion, the wooden case may swell, and the brass may tarnish. If these issues go unchecked for long, the wheel may stop working.
Electrical and Burnt Notes
In most of the synchronous and early electrical mantel clocks, you can notice a burnt smell. It may not be a good sign at all. It indicates that the coil inside may be overheating. Sometimes, a wiring issue can cause the problem. It can lead to a genuine fire risk. Unplugging from the power may be the best solution. It is better not to switch it back on until it has been repaired.
Sour and Sharp Oil Smells
Clock oil usually has a limited life. If it oxidises, it may start to turn gummy and acrid. It may stick to the pivot rather than lubricate it. Your clock may sometimes slow down and at other times run faster. This is why you must service the antique clock every five to eight years.
Mildew and Mould Within the Case
Earthy and sweet may indicate that mould is growing on the fabric backing, dial paper, and case lining. It is better to take action immediately to avoid it from spreading within the dials and chime hammers. Keeping the clock in a dry, well-ventilated condition may be a good idea here.
Chemical Tang
Over time, shellac and varnish can start to break down. It is especially true when placed close to conservatories and radiators. It is a sharp smell that may seem sweet at times. It may not cause any harm to you. However, it can begin to hamper the original finish.
